Tips For Dog Behavior Modification
When you have an anxious dog you may need a few tips for dog behavior modification.
(1) If your dog is suffering from separation anxiety you may want to use a dog crate. This is a good idea if your dog likes her crate because it is a place where the dog feels safe.
(2) When your dog does not like her crate and becomes upset when placed in the crate, this is not a method that will work. Read on for other tips for dog behavior modification.
(3) If your dog shows signs of separation anxiety do not try to reassure the animal. This will only increase the anxiety. Reward for relaxed behaviors rather than rewarding your dog when she is upset.
(4) Teach your dog behaviors that will help them to relax. Teach "sit" and "stay" and reward when the dog complies.
(5) You can extend (3) and (4). When you have taught your dog to relax, begin taking a few steps away from the dog and keep the rewards coming until you can leave the room.
(6) For those pet owners who need to leave their anxious dogs on a daily basis you may need to consider hiring a pet sitter. Doggy daycare is another option.
(7) Some dogs are less anxious when they are able to see outside if their owner is absent. Place her crate next to a window that will allow her to see what is going on in the yard or across the street.
(8) Do not use punishment as a treatment option.
(9) When you leave your dog and you know your dog will come distressed, alleviate as much of the anxiety as possible. Talk to the dog calmly or massage her.
You can use any of these tips for dog behavior modification if your dog suffers from separation anxiety issues.
